The STAR Mission

To foster opportunities for young Romanians to discover their inner strengths and potential through a structured “Sail Training” experience of an adventure at sea in a tall ship.

What is Sail Training?

Sail training is an outdoor adventure activity for young people. Its purpose is not to teach young people how to sail. It is principally to help them learn about themselves, to discover hidden strengths and talents, to understand the value of others and of working as one of a team. It requires an individual to confront many demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires and develops self-confidence and responsibility, an understanding and acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural background, and a willingness to take a calculated risk. For many it can be a life-changing experience.

Current Status of the Organization and Objectives:

1. The Sail Training Association Romania will be formed and incorporated to create and/or promote opportunities for sail training and adventure at sea under sail. While open to all participants, these opportunities are targeted towards Romania’s young people and the benefits they gain through training and adventure at sea under sail based on the principles of teamwork, safety, personal endeavour, self discipline and resourcefulness.

2. The Sail Training Association Romania (STAR) will be a member of the United Kingdom based Charity “Sail Training International” (STI), the other Members are: Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

3. We will achieve our goals by attracting Romanian Sail Training Ship Operators as a member of our organization and contracting the Tall Ship(s) of our member-ship operators for sailtraining

4. Through STI, all Tall Ship events of significance are coordinated internationally and many operational, safety and training matters are discussed and coordinated. STAR will coordinate and represent to STI the views of Romanian State associations, ship operators and interested individuals.

5. We will actively look to extent the Rotary membership in our staff, membership and volunteer bases, with the aim of utilising these “Sail Training Rotarians” to build the bridge between Rotary and sail training in Romania.
